[News] Asian superstars Wonder Girls open for Jonas Brothers 090626

The Jonas Brothers may be the main draw for all the screaming girls Sunday night at the Tacoma Dome, but opener the Wonder Girls are an Asian sensation.

Hailing from South Korea, the Wonder Girls kick off their American tour in the Northwest, opening for the Jonas Brothers in Portland and Seattle; the tour includes other dates along the West and East coasts, too.

The pop quintet — Sun, Yenny, Mimi, Sohee and Yubin — have launched three No. 1 hits in Asia.

“Performing on this tour is such an honor,” said Sun, calling with the entire Wonder Girls group on a conference call from Dallas, where they were rehearsing on the first stop on the Jonas Brothers’ tour. The Jonas Brothers “are very talented. They have been so kind. … It’s a great opportunity for us.”

The Wonder Girls plan on showcasing English versions of two of their popular Korean songs — “Nobody” and “Tell Me.”

“We just want them to enjoy our songs, and be happy from it, and then we’ll be so happy,” said Yenny, the most talkative of the bandmates.

The Wonder Girls are like a throwback to the 1960s, when groups like the Supremes reigned with their sugary pop sound and some Motown flavor. They even rap on some songs.

“Our music is retro-funky-pop music, a mix of the old and the new,” said Yubin, who like all the Wonder Girls, uses her first name only. “Our songs are very easy to follow, no matter how old you are.”

And unlike racy American girl groups such as the Pussycat Dolls, the Wonder Girls are much tamer, with ’60s-style matching clothes and hairstyles.

“Asians like more cute and pretty girls. They’re more like conservative,” Yenny said. “Americans like more sexy and funky, like Lady GaGa.”

Each of the girls — who range in age from 16 to 20 — had to try out for the group. Due to their busy touring and recording schedules, the Wonder Girls lineup already has seen some changes, even though the band formed only two years ago. And two of the youngest girls — Mimi and Sohee, both 16 — recently dropped out of high school to make the tour.

“I think school and studying can be delayed,” Mimi said. “This chance will not come again, so I choose this chance. But, later I want to study more than now. This is really the priority right now.”

Before this tour, the Wonder Girls already made an online impression in the States. Entertainment tabloid blogger Perez Hilton featured the girls’ video on his blog, and plenty of American fans have uploaded to YouTube their imitations of the girls dancing. The Wonder Girls’ simple choreography from their hit “Tell Me” was widely imitated online and spread across the world — the so-called ” ‘Tell Me’ virus.”

“It was neat for us,” Yenny said of the dancing clips. “They really don’t know us, but they cover us.”

The Girls are at work on their American debut album, which will have songs off their past material, as well as new ones.

“It’s very difficult because English is our second language,” Mimi said. “There are so many things we have to learn, but we are trying hard and we hope to be more comfortable in English.”

And like regular teenagers, in their free time from the tour, they go shopping.

“It’ll be great if we can go to Disneyland,” Yenny said.

[News] Can the Wonder Girls Impact the United States?

There hasn’t been a strong presence of Asians or Asian-Americans in the music of the United States. Several artists like BoA and Utada have carved very small niches for their fans online. One of the latest groups to attempt breaking into the US market is Korea’s Wonder Girls. Managed by JYP Entertainment, The Wonder Girls have become minor internet sensations with their music videos for “Tell Me” and “Nobody.” One could find thousands of vocal covers, dance-covers, homemade English versions, and music video parodies of many of the Wonder Girls’ discography.

The Wonder Girls have even made concert tours in the United States under JYP Entertainment hitting New York City and Los Angeles. The girls have spent the last few months training in English as well as reproducing their music from Korean. Soon they will be releasing their hits “Nobody” and “Tell Me” into the English market. Can the girls hit the Billboard charts with steam or will they be like Utada and bubble in the upper 100s of the Top 100. Here are a few advantages the Wonder Girls have over Boa and Utada.

They have a tour lined up – The Wonder Girls have announced that they will serve as the opening act to the Jonas Brothers. Some fans are a little confused about the idea (read: they are not fans of the Jonas Brothers), but when one realizes that all the girls are younger than 25 it makes some sense. With the Jonas Brothers being huge in the teen sector, the Wonder Girls can capture a huge market.

They have very catchy music
– I don’t speak Korean and I love their music. Why? Because it has this universal pop sound. I don’t need to know what they are saying because it’s fun to listen to. For all I know they could be talking about feminine hygiene and I would still love their music. The real question is if their songs will lose something in translation.

They have aggressive management – I truly think that Park Jin Young, founder of JYP Entertainment, knows what he is doing. He’s striking while the iron is hot getting the girls to learn not only English, but Japanese, and Chinese as well.

Fashion Sense – I’m often jealous of petite Asian women because they often can wear a combination of different clothes and mysteriously pull it off. The girls have a very colorful fashion sense and all of them could be trend setters. The “Nobody” video is a take on the film Dreamgirls but they often perform the song in different outfits. If one looks online they have different costumes spreading out the gamut of 60s fashion when they perform “Nobody” in different venues. Their fashion will not stagnate at 50s/60s girl group clothes, but rather be influenced by both European and Asian fashion trends.

They are young – There is the slight chance that the girls will fail in the US, but they still have time to attempt another hit. They have the youth and stamina to tour their songs. They know the usefulness of websites like Facebook and MySpace. They all have Twitter accounts. The girls can make a grassroots push using the internet fan base to gain fame.

As an Asian-American, I hope that the Wonder Girls succeed. Young Asians don’t have many Asian role models, and very few (a few American Idol contestants) are singers.

[Info] How should i say this, remember to thank Sunmi (Trans)

How should i say this, remember to thank Sunmi. Ever since i worked with Yeeun. Every time we meet i would ask her when will she be coming to China again. Once, Sunmi said that she’ll go find JYP and she wants to go to China. But at the time i thought she was only saying it. This time after returning to korea, she laughed saying that she can go to china more frequently in the future.. Heard that she bothered JYP for quite sometime to come to China, and she even told JYP about all the lies i said about China fans liking them and etc…

(When i heard that, i was so nervous..what if i couldnt live up to her expectations.) And the place they decided on is Shanghai.

[news+downloads]Wonder Girls Press Conference Coverage

JYP and the Wonder Girls held a press conference on March 3rd at 2 PM at the Americana at Brand in Glendale, California for the local media and allkpop was there! We took a lot of photos from the event, you can see them at the bottom of this article!

It was a gorgeous sunny day and there’s nothing better than to ditch work, go to the best mall in Southern California and be a part of Wonder Girl history. The girls were brought on stage and they looked absolutely stunning in their matching white sequin dresses! JYP even pulled out the chairs and helped the girls get seated and situated before the conference started.

JYP opened with a short statement of thanks to the sponsors and the venue. He said it was really exciting to be launching the three city concerts here in the US. This is their second US tour and this time it’s a little different because the girls are an equal part of the concert, whereas before they were guests on the JYP Tour.

SunYe said that she was very glad to be here, happy with the finish of the Thailand performance and looking forward to their three US performances. They all worked especially hard to prepare for the US tour and this will lead the way into their eventual entrance into the American market.

During the Q and A session, I asked if they planned on performing some of the previous songs such as Tell Me and Nobody in English for the US concerts. JYP said yes, in fact at the concert, it’ll be the first time they’re singing the English version of Nobody and that they were planning to launch the English versions of their songs in the very near future. He also hopes to eventually enter into world tours wherever there are Wonder Girl fans.

When asked about their visits to LA, JYP said, “To me LA, since I’m a workaholic, it’s a city of television and film. So when I come to LA all I can think of is Nickelodeon, Disney, ABC Family.” Yoobin said that when she comes to LA, first they like to go shopping because the weather is just perfect here all the time. And also because she was from San Jose, she holds a special place in her heart for California.

JYP showed his humorous side when he mentioned he likes visiting the LA clubs to experience the nightlife. We all laughed when he joked that he was only “slightly” over 21 and he loved going to the clubs.

JYP says that the reason why he believes the WG can be successful here in the US is based on the offers he is getting and not on his own instinct. He finds it surprising and encouraging that major American television and record companies approach him, not because he approached them but because they found out about the girls.

On why the girls were so special, JYP said, “they are so pretty and five pretty girls can always be successful anywhere and then I think it’s their singing and dancing. If you think they’re just a cute face, then you’ll be really surprised when you come to the show. For example, the leader, Sun, was trained over 6 years in the academy just singing, acting dancing and the other four ladies, didn’t just debut. They have had multi-year training of acting, singing and dancing so it’s the substance behind that perception that really makes people believe they can cross over, at least that’s what I think.”

The JYP Tour 2009 Press Conference was sponsored by Asiana Airlines, Hyundai, and The Americana at Brand in Glendale, Ca. The event was presented by Powerhouse, Mnet Media and JYP Entertainment. Special thanks to Yoomee @ Powerhouse for giving us the opportunity to meet with JYP and the Wonder Girls!
